Dumbarton House, built 1799, is regarded as one of the finest examples of Federal period architecture in the United States. This stately brick home exhibits several characteristics associated with Federal architecture, such as exterior and interior symmetry, as well as classical motifs which were pervasive throughout the Federal period.

The house is interpreted to the period from 1804 to 1813, when it was owned and occupied by Joseph Nourse and his family. Nourse was the first register of the treasury, serving America’s first six presidents in that capacity.

The Dumbarton House collection includes furnishings, documents, and other artifacts that help tell the story of life in the new capital of the burgeoning American republic. Dumbarton House also serves as the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America National Headquarters.
